My New Obsession: Can Kenji

In Search of Japan in Barcelona

It’s no secret that Japanese food is popular in Barcelona. Talking with a friend the other day, he suggested a sort of quality or authenticity symbol that should be awarded to restaurants serving the ‘real deal’ in sushi and sashimi ( he said the same idea should be applied to paella – there’s a lot of ‘fake’ paella around the city that a local wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot fork!).  Clearly my friend is a visionary. For the time being the only way to know if your sushi spot is a good one is to go and test it out!

I try out a lot of Japanese. I went with another friend to Can Kenji for lunch last week, and was thrilled with what I got. As those who read my posts here know, I love a good menu del dia, or daily special. Can Kenji has an excellent menu de dia, that works a little different than most restaurants. The sushi lunch special is about 14.00 euros. This includes miso, a drink, a huge sushi platter with maki and nigiri, and dessert. It does not include coffee or tea. I got this deal.

My friend paid just two euros more and got another lunch special which allowed him to choose a starter, noodles, a hot fish dish, and a half platter of sushi, plus a drink and green tea ice cream! Of course I was jealous and wished I had had what he had! Next time…..

Point is, this lunch special at Can Kenji is an awesome deal and the food is delicious. A drawback could be that Can Kenji is small and it may be hard to get a table if you don’t call ahead, especially for dinner.
